A misty day on Maui offers the perfect photographic conditions of filtered sunlight through interesting storm clouds to shoot the Iao needles. It is near impossible not to feel inspired when in the presence of such astounding natural beauty. It takes my breath away.
At the end of Iao Valley Road (Highway 32). The Iao Needle, or Kūkaemoku, is another of Maui’s famous landmarks located in Iao Valley State Park. As most of the island’s formations, these sharp tall monoliths are vegetation-covered lava remnants that can rise over 1,200 feet from the valley floor below. These impressive sharp ridges are not really needles at all, but part of the West Maui Mountain range, an extinct volcano.
