Often times, the more difficult the journey in reaching a destination, the sweeter is the reward. Precipice Lake, on the western side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, is one of those places. It is a strenuous two day backpacking hike uphill on the High Sierra Trail from Sequoia National Park to reach this place of phenomenal vistas.
Well named, Precipice Lake does indeed sit on the edge. It is a frigidly beautiful place, as high alpine granite lakes tend to be. The walls are so colorful they defy description. The granite terrain is sharp, jagged, unforgiving. This is not a place to get caught in an early winter’s storm.
