The Wave in the Coyote Buttes in the Paria Wilderness area of northern Arizona hold on my soul. There is just something about the vast expanse of exposed rock and nothing more – a direct connection if you will to the naked soul of the earth.
Getting out to the Wave is one of the most impressive hikes in the world. It took me three trips out there to capture the image I was looking for, a time when the wave would be full of water. The first time there was not enough water, the second time it was frozen over with ice. I guess the third time was the charm.
Located near the Arizona–Utah border not far from Kanab, Utah, this other-worldly place lies on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes of the Colorado Plateau. Amazing sculpted sandstone rock formations are everywhere, colored with the pallet of the nature Gods. It is a famous destination, and BLM Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness permits are required to reach it.
